Kelly back with a bang

first_imgIPGC Golf from the Tara CourtSunday, Nov. 6, Green Valley – Stableford1st Declan Kelly (13) 41pts2nd Nick Caulfield (5) 35pts 3rd Richi Hurley (6) 37pts4th Paul Hubbard (10) 35pts5th Gary Brown (9) 35ptsDeclan Kelly.A bit of confusion on the first tee here today as a party in front of us arrived with a much larger group than they had booked for.  However we insisted on getting off on our allotted tee time and they moved the others on to the tenth tee.  Lucky for us that we did as our last group just got in before the rain came.It seems that a break away from the golf in Thailand is good for your game as many of our winners today had just arrived back.  Declan Kelly came in with an excellent score and was a clear winner with forty one points.  Nick Caulfield took second with thirty seven, just edging Richi Hurley on the count back.  Paul Hubbard came fourth with thirty five points which included two ‘2’s.  Gary Brown also had thirty five but lost out on the count back to Paul and took the fifth and last place for today.Tuesday, Nov. 8, Treasure Hill – Stableford1st Joe Peters (23) 39pts2nd Declan Kelly (13) 35pts3rd Denis Jenkinson (13) 34pts4th Nick Caulfield (5) 33pts5th Joe McLoughlin (23) 33ptsThe rain gods weren’t quiet as friendly to us here at Treasure Hills today and all got caught before we finished.  Our first group were on the seventeenth when it started and decided to play on while the rest took shelter.  At that stage Joe Peters already had thirty nine points so we kept going and although we got to the 18th green and he had a putt for a par, the green was completely flooded and it was impossible so we picked up and went in.As it turned out Joe had done more than enough to come out a very clear winner as the next best score came from Declan Kelly with thirty five points over the eighteen holes.  In third place with thirty four points was Denis Jenkinson and we then had two players on thirty three with Nick Caulfield winning the count back to come fourth and Joe McLoughlin having to settle for the fifth.Surprisingly for a course with long and difficult par threes we had four ‘2’s today, with Craig Hitchens, Joe McLoughlin, Nick Caulfield and Gary Brown having one each.Thursday, Nov. 10, Bangpra – Stableford1st Brendan Bannerton (20) 37pts2nd Declan Kelly (13) 34pts3rd Daryl Burkett (12) 31pts4th Russell Gilroy (16) 29pts5th Jon Batty (7) 28ptsBack up to see the monkeys here at Bangpra, another course which we hadn’t played in a long time but which will now be back on our regular high season schedule.  In comparison to the last time we were here the course was in very good condition and with its usual lighting greens to catch everyone out.Joe Peters.Because of all the rain the course was soft and playing even longer than usual so the scoring wasn’t great.  The only man to beat the course and his handicap was Brendan Bannerton, who is over on a holiday from Ireland and was playing here for his first time.  Brendan was the clear winner with thirty seven points, three ahead of Declan Kelly in second place.  Daryl Burkett took the third spot with thirty one points, Russell Gilroy was fourth place with twenty nine and Jon Batty beat Joe McArdle on the count back to take the fifth and last place with twenty eight.Nick Caulfield got the only ‘2’ of the day.last_img read more

Mystery, excitement for British Open’s return to Portrush

first_imgGolf’s oldest championship returns to the Dunluce Links of Royal Portrush this week for the first time since 1951, the only occasion in 159 years that the British Open was not held in Scotland or England. The response has been a combination of excitement and mystery. The championship was a sellout 11 months ahead of time. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club decided in April to provide an additional 15,000 tickets for tournament days, and those were snatched up quickly. That means more than 200,000 spectators for the competition days of the 148th Open. And that should come as no surprise. Royal Portrush hosted the Irish Open in 2012 and drew 112,000 fans over four days, a European Tour record.“I believe big-time sport needs big-time crowds,” R&A chief Martin Slumbers said. “We’re certainly going to get that.”And what will they see? That’s the mystery. The vast majority of the 156-man field — only 21 players were at the 2012 Irish Open — will be competing on the Harry Colt design for the first time. That included Francesco Molinari, the defending champion who will try to become the first back-to-back winner since Padraig Harrington in 2007-08.There have been a few changes. To make it a large enough stage for the British Open, the R&A with approval from the club changed the routing. Martin Ebert, who consults on a half-dozen links in the Open rotation, took land from the Valley Links to build two new holes, Nos. 7 and 8. The original 17th and 18th holes are now used for the tented village. The nature of the links hasn’t changed. There are fewer bunkers than at most links courses because the contours and cliffs and dunes serve as a reasonable defense. The 16th hole is “Calamity Corner,” where a shot over the ravine on the 236-yard par 3 that falls to the right could wind up 50 feet below the green.Ebert was profuse with his praise of Royal Portrush.“It’s hard to argue that this will be the finest piece of links land which The Open Championship is played,” Ebert said in 2014 when the R&A announced a return to Portrush. “No other venue, I don’t think, has such pure links undulations throughout its 18 holes.”For local favourite Rory McIlroy the pressure might be greater than going for the career Grand Slam at the Masters. He grew up in Holywood, but Royal Portrush feels like home. McIlroy was 16 when he set the course record of 61 at the North of Ireland Amateur.“I think one of the big things for me is to enjoy the experience,” he said. “It might be 68 years until Portrush gets the Open (again), so I have to go out and enjoy it.” Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland is shown in this Saturday, July 6, 2019 photo.(AP Photo/Peter Morrison)Royal Portrush, N. Ireland (AP) – Graeme McDowell winning the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach was a source of pride for Northern Ireland. Rory McIlroy winning the U.S. Open at Congressional the following year with a record score was a source of hope. And then a month later, Darren Clarke became the first Ulsterman in 64 years to raise the silver claret jug.In a span of six majors, three champions came from a small country in the United Kingdom known for its castles, coastal links and three decades of religious and political violence known as “The Troubles.”What began as a question — “Could the British Open return to Royal Portrush?” — became a drumbeat until organizers found a way to make it work.last_img read more

first_imgTiger Woods watches his tee shot on the second hole during the final round of the Wyndham Championship golf tournament at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton)Tiger Woods had a second microdiscectomy surgery on his back this week and will be sidelined the rest of the year.Woods said Friday on his website that he had surgery Wednesday in Park City, Utah.Woods said: “This is certainly disappointing, but I’m a fighter. I’ve been told I can make a full recovery, and I have no doubt that I will.”Dr. Charles Rich performed the operation and also the first procedure in March 2014.Rich said: “With the upcoming offseason, the decision was made to remove a small disc fragment that was pinching his nerve. The microsurgery was a complete success, and he was discharged Thursday night.”Winless this season, Woods failed to qualify for the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs. Inside Conditions…Horror story in St. Louis

first_imgAUBREY BRUCEJust when things couldn’t get any better for the Pittsburgh Steelers, well things went from great to “ghost.”  The Steelers starting QB, “Big” Ben Roethlisberger suffered a left knee injury during the Steelers 12-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams on this past Sunday.  Michael Vick, the second string QB of the Steelers, will be stepping in to replace Roethlisberger for the time that he will be out.Big Ben was the only postgame topic that really mattered to the Steelers. Vick’s reaction when Roethlisberger went down in the third quarter, and he had to grab his helmet and go, said it all.  “I was kind of stunned, “you never want to see a guy like Ben go down.”I was listening to the post game radio analysis of the game and I was in the process of dozing when a comment by some USDA prime “knucklehead” caused me to sit straight up. This individual had  the nerve to say that: “ I can’t prove it but Michael Vick probably wanted :”Big” Ben to get hurt so he could be the starting QB and prove his worth to another team.”Yeah right, and the tooth fairy does not compensate children who travel to the dentist for a tooth extraction as opposed to taking a trip with mom or dad to the tool shed and allowing one of them to extract the offending tooth with a pair of vise grips.Someone even suggested that the Steelers go out and snag QB Tim Tebow as an extra insurance policy until Roethlisberger’s return.Sorry folks, I hate to disappoint yinz but Roethlisberger is going to need some top of the line, cutting edge medical care along with a good old fashioned prayer meeting to get back on the playing field to keep the Steelers season from flying south for the winter.I wonder if the Steelers did decide to snag Tim Tebow would there be protestors out there spitting tobacco juice wearing overalls and cute little outfits or would there be groups holding prayer vigils, releasing balloons of thanks in regards to snagging the most moral, religious vigilante? As far as Roethlisberger’s injury is concerned Rams quarterback Nick Foles had this to say: “we’ll be saying those prayers for Big Ben.”  Please excuse my ignorance but I have uttered and received many a prayer but for the life of me, I need all of you to identify a few of “those” prayers for me so that I can use a slew of them when I give the cashier at the lottery window my “powerball” numbers for the upcoming week. The injury Ben Roethlisberger was caused by a blow administered by an opposing defensive player to prevent the Steelers QB from making a play then, now or in the future.Almost for the life of his career, Ben Roethlisberger has arguably been treated differently in regards to blows delivered to NFL quarterbacks and the empathy associated with those blows.  Why? Well partially because traditionally it has taken a bit more strength to bring Roethlisberger to the ground than the average NFL quarterback.  So the attitude may be; if you have a shot to bring him down, ya better take it.Football is a violent game, played by violent men for a blood thirsty audience, period.  However, we should all be praying for Ben Roethlisberger the man, as well as Ben Roethlisberger the athlete because when his career is all over he will remain a son, a husband and a father.  (espn.com was the source of this story)Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: abruce@newpittsburghcourier.com or 412.583.6741Follow him on Twitter@ultrascribe.last_img read more

Magic Johnson returns to Lakers as adviser to Jeanie Buss

first_imgEL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Magic Johnson returned to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday as an adviser to owner Jeanie Buss, possibly signaling a change in the power structure of the 16-time NBA champion franchise.Johnson, one of the most beloved players in franchise history, will assist Buss “in all areas of basketball and business,” according to the team’s news release.“We are thrilled and honored to add Magic’s expertise and abilities, and I look forward to working alongside him,” Jeanie Buss said.Buss’ brother, Jim, currently runs the Lakers’ basketball operations with general manager Mitch Kupchak, but Los Angeles is in the midst of its fourth consecutive terrible season during the longest playoff drought in franchise history. The Lakers say Johnson will report directly to Jeanie Buss, who has stayed out of basketball operations during her four years running the franchise following the death of her father, Jerry. But Johnson’s arrival seems to signal her desire for more influence in the on-court product of a team that was the NBA’s most exciting during Magic’s Showtime playing days.“Everyone knows my love for the Lakers,” Johnson said. “Over the years, I have considered other management opportunities, however my devotion to the game and Los Angeles make the Lakers my first and only choice. I will do everything in my power to help return the Lakers to their rightful place among the elite teams of the NBA.”The Lakers went through the worst times in their glowing history over the previous three seasons after failing in their 2012-13 attempt to chase a title with Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol. While Bryant struggled with injuries, the Lakers posted the worst record in franchise history for three straight seasons, culminating in last year’s 17-65 embarrassment in Bryant’s 20th and final campaign. The current Lakers are much more entertaining under first-year coach Luke Walton, but they still have the NBA’s third-worst record at 17-34 heading into a five-game road trip starting Thursday in Washington. Their playoff drought is all but certain to reach a club-record four seasons.Johnson was an honorary vice president of the Lakers until last year, when the title was dropped at his request — and also because Johnson frequently tweeted criticism of Lakers coaches and handed out praise for free agents, possibly in violation of league rules. Johnson also held an ownership stake in the Lakers, but sold it in 2010.Johnson has enjoyed successful careers in business and broadcasting after retiring from his playing and coaching career with the Lakers, where he enjoyed an extraordinarily close relationship with Jerry Buss. The former point guard is a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, among many other endeavors.“Magic Johnson is one of the NBA’s greatest players and it is terrific to see him returning to the Lakers,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “He is a truly special person and a natural leader with a relentless passion for basketball and profound knowledge of the game.”As her father wished, Jeanie Buss has deferred on basketball decisions to her brother, who started working in the Lakers’ front office in 1998 after dabbling as a horse trainer and an executive for an indoor soccer team.Jim Buss and Kupchak have built a solid base of young talent in the last three years, drafting Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram with high picks. But the Lakers still appear to be far from contention, and they must give up their first-round draft pick this season if it doesn’t fall in the top three under the profligate conditions of the current front office’s long-ago trade for Nash.Jim Buss once told his siblings that he would step down if the Lakers weren’t a championship contender again by the 2016-17 season. That hasn’t happened, and though Buss’ declaration isn’t legally binding, Johnson’s arrival could hasten a transition.,EL SEGUNDO, Calif. Cuonzo Martin says he wants to be at Mizzou for long haul

first_imgCuonzo Martin speaks after being introduced as Missouri men’s basketball coach Monday, March 20, 2017, in Columbia, Mo. Martin spent the past three seasons as coach at California and comes to Missouri with hopes he can revive the struggling program. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Cuonzo Martin is making something of a homecoming, and he’d be happy to stick around for a while this time.Martin, a native of East St. Louis, Illinois, was introduced as men’s basketball coach for Missouri on Monday.Following stints with Tennessee and California, Martin says he’s ready to put down roots about a two-hour drive from his hometown.“If Mizzou keeps me for 20 years, then it’s my plan to be here 20 years,” Martin said. “This is it for me.”Director of athletics Jim Sterk and university chancellor Hank Foley introduced Martin at Mizzou Arena.“All of us want to see our programs compete for championships and consistently play for postseason and represent Mizzou in the right way on and off the court,” Sterk said. “Today, we’re able to check off all the boxes needed to develop a championship-level program with the hiring of Cuonzo Martin.”Martin played at Purdue from 1991-95 under coach Gene Keady and was selected 57th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1995 NBA draft. He served as an assistant coach at Purdue from 2000-08 before accepting his first head-coaching position at Missouri State, where he posted a 61-41 record in three seasons. He then coached three seasons with the Volunteers before taking over at Cal in 2014.Martin resigned as coach of the Golden Bears on March 15 after posting a 62-39 record in three seasons. He signed a $21 million, seven-year contract with Missouri, making him the highest paid basketball coach in school history. He’ll make $2.7 million in his first season, with that total increasing by $100,000 annually over seven years.Cuonzo Martin walks past a pep band and cheerleaders to be formally introduced to fans as the new men’s basketball coach at Missouri, Monday, March 20, 2017, in Columbia, Mo. Additionally, the contract details a number of provisions, including two courtesy cars and a country club membership, as well as an additional $1.1 million budget for basketball-specific staff.Martin replaces Kim Anderson, who had a 27-68 record in three seasons, including a conference record of 8-46. Anderson was asked to step down March 5.After thanking university officials and introducing his wife and three children, Martin got down to business, discussing everything from his team’s style of play to the circumstances surrounding his hiring.“Coach (Anderson) can coach,” Martin said of his predecessor. “Stuff happens. … If somebody was already employed in their job, you know how tough these jobs are, so you don’t want somebody losing their job so you can take it from them. It just presented itself, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”Martin already has some SEC familiarity from his time at Tennessee. He was 63-41 with the Vols and went to the Sweet Sixteen in 2014.“We like to play extremely hard,” Martin said of previous teams. “The one thing we talk about all the time is to play unselfishly as a team. … My job is to put you in position to be a successful basketball player, but the things that we cannot compromise are defending, rebounding and playing hard.”Martin met with Missouri players for the first time about an hour before the press conference. Point guard Terrence Phillips seemed optimistic.“I’m just such a high-energy guy, I think having a coach that’s like that, it brings excitement to me,” Phillips said. “We don’t know what our offense is going to be like or what our defensive mentality is going to be like, so it’s just really having to kind of take a step back and just see what (Martin) wants.”,Cuonzo Martin speaks after being introduced as Missouri men’s basketball coach Monday, March 20, 2017, in Columbia, Mo. FIFA say Galatasaray did not sign Kevin Grosskreutz in time

first_img 03/09/2015 Upd. at 18:07 CEST David de Gea was not the only player racing against the clock to sign for a new side on Monday night. Galatasaray were also hoping to get a deal done for Kevin Grosskreutz. In principle, it seemed like the operation between the Turkish side and Borussia Dortmund had been completed for the versatile German player, with a deal for seven million euros agrees between the clubs. In fact, the player had even travelled to Istambul, where he was received as a hero. However, FIFA have communicated that the player’s contract had been sent after the deadline, so the deal could not be completed. The documents to finalise the deal, because of problems with the famous ITMS, were sent at 00.00.48. Despite protests from both clubs, the world governing body of football refused to sanction the deal. Dortmund, though, have allowed the player to join up with the Turkish team anyway, but he will not be able to play until January.  Sport ENlast_img read more
