first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Bournemouth boss Howe dismisses Spurs thrashing: A bizarre gameby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveBournemouth boss Eddie Howe refused to be down after their 5-0 humbling by Tottenham.Christian Eriksen, Son-Heung Min (2), Lucas Moura and Harry Kane found the net at Wembley. But Howe reasoned, “It was a strange game and we had some really good moments at the start. We had a couple of very presentable opportunities, which we didn’t take.”The first goal, it was a big deflection from distance and the goalkeeper could do nothing about it. We never truly recovered and we conceded a couple of poor goals from there.”It was a bizarre game, I’m sure we’ll look back at it and find some good things to take away but ultimately we’re disappointed to lose.”He added: “It’s difficult because we have games so quickly. We’re disappointed, we all expect better and the players feel the same.”We can’t dwell on this, but we have to learn our lessons. We can’t go too deep, the next one will come quickly, so let’s focus on that. It’s a key stage of the season.” last_img read more

10 months agoMan Utd Loan Watch: Five players Solskjaer could recall in January

first_imgMan Utd Loan Watch: Five players Solskjaer could recall in Januaryby Phillip Ekuwem10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveIn the past Manchester United were revered for always giving youngsters an opportunity to break into the first-team set-up.While football isn’t what it used to be, United still practice that tradition in some form, often giving young players a chance to prove themselves in the Premier League. But considering the quality within the club’s ranks, the criteria for becoming a first-team player at United is quite high which is why the club sends young players out on loan to assess their performances at clubs in various leagues including the Premier League. Here’s a look at five Manchester United youngsters currently out on loan:Joel Pereira22-year-old shot-stopper Joel Pereira was sent out on loan to Liga Nos outfit Vitoria Setubal back in August to aid his development considering the competition he’d face if he remained at United this season. He’s put up some great performances for Vitoria Setubal and has quickly become a fan favourite and regular starter at the club – and deservedly so. He’s made 20 saves and kept 2 clean sheets in 720 minutes for Setubal. With Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper being David De Gea, it’s hard to imagine Pereira taking his spot in the near future. But should De Gea opt to leave Old Trafford anytime soon, the Red Devils are likely to give Pereira an opportunity to become United’s number one goalkeeper.Timothy Fosu-MensahFosu-Mensah made a couple of appearances for United in Pre-season and showed why he’s regarded as one of the best young full-backs in Europe. He’s agile, fast, and capable of reading and intercept passes, plus he’s great at crossing the ball; he’s still quite young so he’s prone to mistakes every now and then, but for the most part he’s a quality player which is why most United fans were unhappy about his loan exit. He’s currently on loan to relegation-strugglers Fulham, who have failed to get their act together since making their way to the Premier League. Fosu-Mensah has not featured for Fulham since being subbed off at half-time in his side’s 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield. He doesn’t appear to be in Claudio Ranieri’s plans as the Italian tactician has not included him in any of his match day squads since taking over at Craven Cottage.Fosu-Mensah, though, remains a talented player and should Ranieri give him the nod going forward, he’s sure to do his best for Fulham.Axel TuanzebeEver since moving to Aston Villa on loan at the start of the season, Alex Tuanzebe has become a mainstay in the team. After struggling with the Championship’s pace in his first few games at Villa, Tuanzebe quickly became accustomed to the league and has since made a name for himself as one of the best defenders in the division. He’s great in the air as evidenced by the 63 aerial duels he’s won thus far – Tuanzebe has also managed 17 interceptions which is pretty decent considering his age.The 21-year-old still needs a lot of time to develop into a centre-back capable of playing for a top Premier League side, but judging by his progress with Villa he’s definitely on the right track.Cameron Borthwick-JacksonCameron Borthwick-Jackson currently plies his trade in League one side Scunthorpe where he features as a left-back. He’s made 17 appearances out of a possible 21 games as Stuart McCall believes him to be the best left-back in the club at the moment. He’s bagged two goals for Scunthorpe so far, both of which coincidentally came in the same game against Charlton Athletic back in October.Scunthorpe currently sit in 20th-place having garnered just 21 points thus far. Whilst Borthwick-Jackson has played well for them so far, he hasn’t been particularly outstanding bar a few games.James WilsonOnce compared to Liverpool legend Ian Rush, James Wilson is yet to live up to the billing despite enjoying a successful career in Manchester United’s youth set-up. The 23-year-old was loaned out to Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen and has not managed to secure a regular starting berth under manager Derek McInnes. He’s made just seven starts so far and has bagged two goals. TagsOpinionAbout the authorPhillip Ekuwem FollowShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

I’m close to my family, the fans have been fantastic, so you try to do something properly.”It’s a challenge, but it’s a risk. Yes, it’s a risk. I will try to do my best to win every single game, but obviously it depends on the players that you have.” last_img read more

Valencia had Mouctar Diakhaby sent off five minutes from time after being shown two yellow cards in quick succession.”We have never been comfortable. It cost us a lot with the ball and has been the tone throughout the game,” said Celades.”We improved in the second-half, but in the first-half it cost us. In general, we have had little fluidity in the game because we have been pressed and pressed. They have generated many chances.”All matches are crucial in the Champions League because there’s only six. Everything matters a lot and penalises you for any mistakes. Arsenal set to beat Spurs to £27m Saliba

first_imgArsenal are hopeful they have seen off Tottenham in the race for William Saliba. The 18-year-old centre-back has been a priority target for the Gunners this summer and they thought they had landed the teenager when a £27 million ($34m) deal was agreed with Saint-Etienne last week. But just as the transfer was in the process of being finalised, Tottenham made a late move for the defender which threw his potential move to the Emirates into doubt. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Spurs’ bid was for the same amount, but it included a payment structure and add-ons that were more appealing to the Ligue 1 outfit.Saint-Etienne then requested that Arsenal matched the offer, which they did – and the Gunners are now on the verge of sealing a deal for the talented Frenchmen.Saliba had already agreed a five-year contract at the Emirates and will spend the first year of that back on loan with Saint-Etienne for the 2019/20 campaign.Arsenal will not have to pay much of the transfer fee in the initial down payment, so the deal will not have much of an impact on Unai Emery’s transfer budget this summer.Saliba’s arrival will be warmly welcomed at the Emirates, with the club’s scouting network having identified the centre-back as a priority target having watched him extensively during the second half of last season. And the potential deal comes as Arsenal are also close to landing Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid. The Gunners are in advanced talks with the Spanish giants over a loan move for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.Madrid have yet to fully agree to the move, but it is believed manager Zinedine Zidane will not prevent the Spain international from leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.Should Zidane give the green light for Ceballos to complete the transfer, it should be finalised relatively quickly, with Arsenal keen to wrap up a deal. The potential move coincides with comments from Arsenal director Josh Kroenke – the son of owner Stan Kroenke – telling fans to be excited about what could come before the close of the transfer window next month.“I would say ‘be excited’,” Kroenke told “There are a few things that I know our group are working on, and a few things we hopefully have on the doorstep. “Nothing is ever a done deal until it’s a done deal, obviously, but we know we have key areas we want to address in our squad, both now and in the future. “Our entire football operations staff have a great grasp on that and I’ve encouraged them to be as expressive as possible.”Meanwhile, Unai Emery has stated that he is hoping to see three of four new faces arrive before the transfer window closes on August 8.The Spaniard, who saw his side kick-off their pre-season tour to the United States with a 3-0 win against Colorado Rapids, said: “We need players with big performances.”Our target is to get three or four players who really improve our squad now. We are being very, very demanding and first speaking about the possibility to sign very expensive players. “The first player in our list is our first target, if we cannot achieve that [we’ll go for] the second. We  think they’re going to improve our squad.”last_img read more
